Hands Up For National Evidence of Legal Rights

With the ongoing spread of the Covid pandemic and recent floodings in the Greater Southern Queensland regions, Community Legal Centres are forced to turn away 80 people a week per electorate who need help due to the lack of funding.

At TASC we understand the effect this can have on a person and within the community itself. That is why we support the need to (1) increase funding for regular sector surveys to make better decision making and service delivery and (2) to see an additional investment of 1.5 million dollars every four years to increase the sector’s capacity to quickly respond to the changing legal needs of our community.

Hands Up For Financial Rights

Everyday, Community Legal Centres (CLC) like TASC Legal and Social Justice Services work with local communities to support people who experience financial disadvantage to access justice regardless of their earnings. It is easy to find ourselves in this situation through no fault of your own and that is why at TASC we understand the reality of poverty and put our hands up to help advocate for your rights!

LANDLORDS ACROSS AUSTRALIA CONTINUE TO EVICT TENANTS AMIDST PANDEMIC CRISIS – HOW TASC CAN HELP

With little government support and in some cases accrued rental debts, renters throughout South West Queensland continue to be evicted from their homes amid the pandemic.

TASC’s Tenancy Advocates in Toowoomba still see a steady stream of tenants coming to access our services since the pandemic hit, especially in cases where they have been unlawfully evicted.

CEO Frances Klaassen OAM said that with little government support now offered renters often have no choice but to leave their homes.

“We have seen a consistent trend in our tenancy cases where landlords have unfairly evicted a tenant, leaving them at risk of homelessness and in some cases are already homeless,” Ms. Klaassen said.

“I am saddened to see this, and even though realtors are doing their best, it seems compassion for those doing it tough has been forgotten by some. It is important to remember, that as a tenant you have rights too, and we can help you voice them.”

This is where we can help, TASC provides Toowoomba residents with access to advice that assists in managing issues and disputes that may arise with their tenancy.

If you find yourself being evicted with no reason given, it is important to remember that under the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act 2008 and Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Regulations 2009, landlords cannot end your agreement without reasonable grounds before the last day of the fixed term.

We take referrals directly from Queensland Statewide Tenant Advice and Referral Service (QSTARS) by calling them on 1300 744 263. Make sure to state you live in Toowoomba and would like to access our services.

Remember, you’re not alone, TASC is here to help. For more information on our Tenancy Advocacy services, please visit www.tascnational.org.au.
